Chapter 12 - Come Alive Rinses

hair coloring tip Today, temporary color rinses are experiencing an amazing growth in popularity. This is largely true because of the great strides that have been made in the performance of such products.

Come Alive Rinses by Clairol are perfect examples of superior, modern temporary hair coloring. They make it quick, easy and inexpensive for you to give patrons beautiful, evenly gray hair ... without any of the problems that accompany the use of old-fashioned temporary rinses. And the timid patron does not shy away from temporary rinses because she knows they can easily be shampooed out.

It is easy and profitable to sell patrons on using Come Alive Rinses when they have their regular shampoo and set. One treatment shows them what a beautiful difference these new rinses make. One to two weeks of wearing a Come Alive Rinse between shampoos does more than words to prove that the color will not wear off until it is shampooed out.

Come Alive Gray

Come Alive Gray Rinses give highlights and sheen to all kinds of gray hair and make gray hair a more beautiful gray. There are four beautiful shades:

White Sapphire
            Silver Diamond
            Black Pearl
            Midnight Opal

Come Alive Gray is a specially designed rinse which makes gray hair look beautifully gray. It banishes yellow discoloration and gives gray hair a rich, even tone, an iridescent quality that can make it so attractive. And Come Alive Gray adds no blue or purple* tones.

What Come Alive Gray Does
  1. COME ALIVE GRAY comes in 4 shades that stay color-true until shampooed out. There's one shade that's right for every type of gray hair—white, almost-white, gray and salt-and-pepper.

  2. COME ALIVE GRAY is quick and easy to use—takes just 2 to 5 minutes.

  3. COME ALIVE GRAY adds beautiful iridescent colors to gray or white hair. The colors range from light platinum to smoky gray tones.

  4. COME ALIVE GRAY de-emphasizes the gray in salt-and-pepper hair.

  5. COME ALIVE GRAY highlights and brightens gray, white or salt-and-pepper hair that has become dull, drab or mousey.

  6. COME ALIVE GRAY leaves the hair shining with youthful radiance . . . takes the grimness out of gray.

  7. COME ALIVE GRAY conditions the texture of the hair . .. leaves it silky-soft, shining with life and vitality.

  8. COME ALIVE GRAY makes hair easy to manage.

  9. COME ALIVE GRAY banishes all yellow from gray or white hair. (Yellow is the unsightly discoloration that occurs mostly in almost-white, white or steel gray tones.)

  10. COME ALIVE GRAY leaves no blue or purple cast—just clear lustrous beauty.

Come Alive Gray Shades
Come Alive Gray comes in 4 shades:

1. WHITE SAPPHIRE                         This is the lightest shade. It adds a
brilliant pearly glow to white and
                                                            almost-white hair.
2. SILVER DIAMOND                       This is a medium shade. It polishes
white and gray hair to gleaming
                                                            silver.
3. BLACK PEARL                              This a deep shade. It adds sparkle as
                                                            it evens tones of salt-and-pepper
                                                            gray.
4. MIDNIGHT OPAL                         This is the deepest shade. It adds
luster as it conceals gray with rich,
                                                            smoky tones.

Color Mixing

With the exception of Midnight Opal, these colors can be mixed together for greater variation. For instance: —

  1. Mix White Sapphire with Silver Diamond for a shade half-way between Platinum and Silver.

  2. Mix White Sapphire with Black Pearl for a shade half-way between Platinum and Smoky Gray.

  3. Mix Silver Diamond with Black Pearl for a shade half-way between Silver and Smoky Gray.

These shades can be modified by varying the quantities of each that are used.

How To Use Come Alive Gray Rinses

Come Alive Rinses are mixed and applied just like any other rinse. Here are the basic steps to remember in giving successful Come Alive treatments:

  1. Select the right color. Find the color you want in the Color Selector Chart.

  2. Shampoo the hair. Give a thorough shampoo as you do before any other rinse. While your patron is at the shampoo board with her head tilted back, remove all excess water with a towel.

  3. Shake bottle of Come Alive Rinse before using. It is important to shake all colors well to be certain you get their full value when mixed.

  4. Mix color with HOT WATER. Mix Come Alive Rinse according to the formula on the bottle. The total amount of coloring mixture (Come Alive Rinse plus hot water) should be approximately 3 to 4 ounces. Make sure you use enough to thoroughly saturate the hair. It is important to use hot water. The hotter the water, the better the results. Make the water as hot as possible without it being uncomfortable to your patron.

  5. Measure Carefully. Be sure to dilute Come Alive rinse accurately. Each tap of the automatic dispenser measures ¼ ounce. Tap Come Alive rinse into a glass of plastic measuring cup, a graduate or a Miss Clairol Plastic Applicator so that you can measure accurately the amount of water added. Mix with hot water according to the formula on the bottle. It is advisable to keep a record card just as you do in regular tinting. This will show you the proportions you have used and will enable you to repeat the same shade on the patron each week.

  6. Apply to hair. Start on the portion of the hair nearest the scalp, and work toward the ends. You may use a brush, cotton swab, or plastic applicator. Make sure that all strands are saturated. If ends are porous, dilute the mixture just before applying it to the ends. After applying, comb the hair thoroughly for even color distribution.

  7. Time the development. You may work the Come Alive mixture through the hair like any other rinse. But to get the full effect of the iridescent colors and best wearing qualities, allow Come Alive rinse to remain on the hair from 2 to 5 minutes. For a deep shade, use the full 5 minutes.
  8. Rinse thoroughly. Rinse the hair thoroughly with warm water until the rinse water runs clear. A thorough final rinse is important. Thorough rinsing will help keep Come Alive rinse from rubbing off.

Other Uses For Come Alive Gray

In addition to glamorizing gray and white hair, Come Alive Gray may, also, be used for the following purposes:

  1. An "in-between" toning treatment on Silver or Ash Blonde hair. Come Alive Gray may be applied to Silver, Ash or Platinum Blonde hair during the regular weekly shampoo. It will revitalize the color and avoid any faded look which might develop from retouch to retouch.

Use White Sapphire if the patron has been toned with a light Platinum shade, White or Platinum Beige.

Apply Silver Diamond if a light Silver, Silvery Ash or Light Ash Blonde toner has been used.

Use Black Pearl if your patron has been toned with a dark Ash Blonde or a deep Smoky Silver.

  2. To tone hair after bleaching

    (a) Come Alive Gray is most useful when hair is being bleached or stripped, and the patron must be sent home before the decolorizing process is complete. The hair may be made presentable by a temporary Come Alive Gray toning treatment which will last until the next visit.

Use White Sapphire if you wish to keep the hair as light as possible. Use Silver Diamond if you want some depth of color or if there is a great deal of gold or brassiness.

  3. (b) Come Alive Gray can be used as a toner on women who may be sensitive to regular tints. However, with sensitive patrons always give a patch test before using Come Alive Gray.

  4. To Drab Red or Gold tones Come Alive Gray may be used to drab red or gold tones caused by sun-bleaching or permanent waving. It can also be used to modify red or gold tones on tinted hair, between treatments or after treatments.

  5. As an Inexpensive Toner Come Alive Gray may be used profitably as a toner on your bleach customers who normally do not get the more expensive toning treatments.

  6. As a Spot Toner Many times there are sections of the hair which are insufficiently drab after a bleach or toner treatment. The gold spots remaining are usually caused by insufficient bleaching in these areas. You can even the shade somewhat by applying Come Alive Gray to the affected areas. This will last until the next treatment. Use White Sapphire on extremely light shades of hair and Silver Diamond on the deeper Silver or Ash colors.

If areas are extremely brassy, do not rinse hair after application of Come Alive Gray. Otherwise, give an after-rinse of clear water. Remember . . . this will not permanently correct this problem. In order to even the color on the strand, you will have to apply bleach to the affected areas.

Come Alive Red, Brown And Blonde

All three Come Alive Colors have become important additions to the field of temporary rinses because they offer more color without the coated or heavy look some products produce. Use them to achieve more perfect results when the following effects are desired.

Brilliant highlights for natural or tinted hair the same shade Color coverage or blending of gray hair with natural shade Like Come Alive Gray Rinses, Come Alive Colors stay color-true from shampoo to shampoo, leave hair beautifully conditioned, easy for you to comb and set—easy for the patron to handle between shop visits. Equal parts of Come Alive Blonde and Come Alive Brown produces a light golden brown shade.
Equal parts of Come Alive Red and Come Alive Brown produces a light to medium reddish brown shade.

You can get in-between variations of these colors by changing the proportions in these mixtures according to your own good judgment. For instance, by decreasing the amount of the darker color in the mixture, you will get a lighter interpretation of the shade.

The depth of the color is actually controlled by the amount of water used. You may lighten the shade by adding greater amounts of water.
Note:

Come Alive rinses are harmless to the normal scalp and skin. Nevertheless, like the purest food, it may produce an allergic reaction in a susceptible person. If there is any sign of an allergic scalp irritation after using this product, discontinue its use until proper patch testing shows that this product is not the cause of that irritation.

Come Alive rinses must not be used for dyeing the eyebrows or eyelashes because of the possibility of an allergic reaction of the delicate orbital tissues.
