Chapter 11 - Frosting, Tipping And Streaking

Some of the most interesting and fashionable effects in hair styling can be achieved by Frosting, Tipping and Streaking. These treatments frequently serve as an introduction to bleaching or tinting for the woman who is undecided about more complete coloring. The dramatic results obtained from these hair effects add a fresh fashion note for a woman of any age ... from high school girl to the woman beginning to gray.
Frosting, Tipping and Streaking are obtained by lightening parts of the hair with a bleach and allowing the remainder of the hair to retain its darker shade. The hair may be lightened only a few shades or it can be made almost white to give the illusion of gray streaks or tips. Sometimes a toner is used after bleaching.
There are a number of different effects which can be achieved:
- FROSTING — This gives a light effect all over the hair. Tiny strands of hair all over the head are lightened to blend in with the darker hair.
- TIPPING—This gives the same lightening effect as Frosting but is confined to the front of the head ... 2 or 3 inches back from the forehead.
- STREAKING—In Streaking, bleach is applied to one, two, three or four attractively placed broad streaks of hair around the face. Streaking is quite different from Frosting or Tipping where the bleach is applied only to tiny strands rather than broader streaks.
- SUN TIPS BY CLAIROL—a quick easy method for lightening hair around face.
This type of bleaching requires skilled and careful application. It is most important for the bleaching to appear casual so that the streaks or tips blend in with the darker hair. If the bleaching looks patterned, the natural effect is destroyed.
Blue LighteningBlue Lightening, Clairol's all-purpose powder bleach is recommended for most of this type of bleaching. It decolorizes dark hair in the shortest amount of time and works quickly even on resistant hair.
How To Apply Blue Lightening For Clairol Sun Tips, Frosting, Tipping And Streaking
The preliminary preparation and mixing of the bleach are the same for Sun Tips, Frosting, Tipping and Streaking.
Preliminary Preparation- Do not shampoo hair. Bleach is applied to dry hair.
- Use Blue Lightening Fashion Foils or cut aluminum foil into pieces 4 inches by 5 inches for use in separating hair strand to be bleached, unless bleaching cap method is preferred.
- Study hair style for most attractive lightening effects.
Mix two or three tablespoons of Blue Lightening in a glass or plastic dish with enough Clairoxide or Pure White Creme Developer to make a creamy paste. The amount of developer may be varied to give the thickness preferred.
Do not prepare bleach until you are ready to use it.
Bleaching Cap Method With Blue LighteningFor a quick method of tipping and frosting, some shops prefer to use a bleaching cap. These plastic caps come with the perforations or holes already made to simplify the job.
With a fine crochet needle pull hair through the holes. Apply bleach heavily to strands with a brush. Wrap entire head with a large sheet of aluminum foil or cover with a plastic cap which usually comes with the bleaching cap. Bleaching may be hastened by placing patron under a dryer. When strands are bleached to desired shade, rinse off bleach while bleaching cap is still on. Then remove the cap carefully and shampoo with the new Clairol Shampoo for Bleached and Toned Hair.

Bleaching Cap Method for Tipping or Frosting.
Frosting With Blue Lightening- Pin up all hair so that it is out of the way, leaving a 1-inch section at the nape of the neck.
- Start at the right of this section and part off a 1-inch square.
- Pick up hairs with a fine rat-tail comb in this 1-inch square section with a darning movement. Weave in and out picking up 6 to 10 strands depending on the heaviness of the frosting desired. There should be about 12 hairs in each of these tiny strands. As you weave in and out, pick up hairs beneath the top layer.
- Slip hairs off the comb and place a piece of aluminum foil beneath them ... as close to the scalp as possible.
- Apply bleach to hair, starting x/i inch away from the scalp. To avoid seepage, put a little piece of cotton next to it. Fold foil to cover hair. Flatten foil and fold up from bottom two or three times without twisting. Now that this strand has been prepared continue across the bottom row of hair preparing 1-inch strands.
- Next start on a layer of hair just above the bottom layer, but pattern rows in checkerboard fashion so that there will be no regular, definite pattern in the completed hairstyle. A loose, casual effect is more attractive. Continue working to the top and front of the head, omitting a layer of hair about % inch in width at the front hairline.
- Now comb hair at the front hairline away from the face. Part hair in 1-inch squares. Continue weaving motion holding comb parallel to hairline. Apply bleach and wrap with foil as before.
- Wipe a little bleach away from a back strand to see if hair has lightened sufficiently. If hair is bleached enough, remove foil in same pattern as it was applied. If hair is not light enough, adjust a hairnet loosely around entire head and put customer under a dryer for five minutes or more.
- Rinse each strand individually in soapy water when bleaching is completed to remove bleach and avoid lightening remainder of head.
- Apply Clairol toner, according to directions, to bleached strands only, if toning is desired.
- Rinse hair and shampoo at shampoo board.
Frosting

Part off Hair checkerboard fashion so that bleaching will appear casual.Pick up tiny strands of hair with a darning movement.
Slip hairs off the comb and place a piece of aluminum foil beneath them.
Tipping With Blue Lightening
Tipping is done just like Frosting, only it is confined to the front of the head ... 2 or 3 inches back from the forehead.
Begin bleaching at the back of the area and work toward hairline.
Apply bleach and proceed as for Frosting.
Clairol Sun TipsA Quick, Easy Method for Lightening Hair At The Hairline
- Part hair lengthwise, beginning in front center of the head. Part off section ⅛ inch wide and 2½ inches in length. Hold strand up vertically from head.
- Place a Fashion Foil or a piece of aluminum foil, folded in a triangle, in back of strand.
- Apply bleach with a brush beginning ½ inch away from scalp.
- Close foil and fold to scalp.
- Part off a second strand ½ to 1 inch away from the first. The closer the strands the lighter the final effect. Apply bleach to second strand and continue parting and applying bleach until you reach the ear. Then proceed on the other side. If you wish, you can extend bleaching to back of head.
- Remove foils in the same order that they were applied when hair is sufficiently bleached. To hasten bleaching action, you can adjust a hairnet loosely over the head and put patron under dryer for five minutes or more.
- Rinse each individual section in soapy water to remove bleach when hair has lightened enough. This preliminary rinsing keeps the bleach from spreading and lightening remainder of hair.
- Now apply Clairol toner according to directions, to bleached strands only, if toning is desired.
- Finally rinse hair thoroughly and shampoo after toning or preliminary rinsing.
Part hair lengthwise. Place a piece of aluminum foil, folded into a triangle, in back of strand.
- Part off strands of hair to be lightened and fasten them with a clip or bobby pins. The usual amount of hair for each streak is a strand ½ inch in width and 1 to 2 inches in length.
- Protect hair behind each strand by applying heavy cream shampoo, reconditioning oil or any heavy hair cream. For additional protection, place a piece of cotton behind strands to be bleached.
- Place a Blue Lightening Fashion Foil or a square of aluminum foil beneath the strand.
- Apply bleach to strand, starting ½ inch away from scalp. If ends are damaged do not apply to ends until later.
- Fold foil to cover strand and repeat procedure for remainder of strands.
- Allow bleach to develop, checking frequently, until strands have reached golden blonde stage.
- Now apply bleach to hair near scalp and to ends, if they have been excluded. Close foil and allow bleach to develop until the hair is light enough.
- Unwrap streaks one by one. Dip each streak in a dish of soapy water as you unwrap to remove bleach and to avoid bleaching remainder of head.
- If toning is desired, apply Clairol toner according to directions to bleached sections.
- Rinse hair and shampoo at shampoo board.
Part off a few strands of hair around face about l/2 inch in width and 1 to 2 inches in length.
