Chapter 7 - Salon Formula Red Fashion Colors

An exciting new group of Salon Formula shades is the Red Fashion Colors. These colors are for women who prefer a brighter, more dramatic haircoloring.
The Red Fashion Colors, unlike other Salon Formula colors, are packaged with Lady Clairol Whipped Creme Hair Lightener. Each Red Fashion package contains a ¾ oz. bottle of Red Fashion Color in Creme Formula and a ¾ oz. bottle of Lady Clairol. When these two bottles are combined they give even greater bleaching action than the lightest red colors in Miss Clairol.
The Red Fashion Colors are:
Fire Silver the reddest and brightest of the series.
Sun Silver a light red color.
Pink Silver a medium red color.
Cherry Silver a deep red color. Each of these colors can be used in the following ways:
- Without pre-bleaching.
- As a toner to give glamorous red shades to pre-bleached hair.
- As a toner to give a high fashion, pink-red tone to highly bleached hair.
Applied directly to unbleached hair, it lightens hair, and produces exciting red shades.
Mixing Red Fashion Colors
The Red Fashion colors may be used with or without the Lady Clairol in the package. A lighter effect is achieved with Lady Clairol because of its bleaching action. Without Lady Clairol, a darker interpretation of the same color is created.
For the lighter colors — Mix one bottle of Red Fashion Color (¾ oz.) and one bottle of Lady Clairol (¾ oz.) with 3 oz. Clairoxide or Pure White Creme Developer.
For the darker colors — Mix one bottle of Red Fashion Color (¾ oz.) with ¾ oz. Clairoxide or Pure White Creme Developer.
Greater variations with these four new Red shades can be achieved by changing the proportions of the Red color and Lady Clairol. Using more Lady Clairol and less Red color in the mixture gives a lighter shade of red.
Application To Natural (Unbleached) HairFor a light red shade:
¾ oz. Red Fashion Color
¾ oz. Lady Clairol
3 oz. Clairoxide
For a deep red shade:
¾ oz. Red Fashion Color
¾ oz. Clairoxide
Virgin Hair.
- Apply the mixture to entire strand, starting 1 inch from roots.
- Take a strand test as soon as you have finished this application.

When the hair has lightened half as much as the final color desired, apply the mixture to the root area.
3. Rinse and shampoo after the hair has lightened enough and the color has developed sufficiently.
Retouch.
- Apply the mixture to the re-growth area and allow it to develop until the test strand shows roots have lightened sufficiently.
- Comb the balance of the mixture through the entire head.
- Test for color.
- Rinse and shampoo with Clairol Shampoo for Bleached and Toned Hair.
For Porous Ends.
- Mix the following:
bottle of Red Fashion Color
½bottle of Lady Clairol

- Allow to develop until color is even throughout.
- Rinse and shampoo with Clairol Shampoo for Bleached and Toned Hair.
As A Tint On Pre-Bleached But Not Highly Bleached Hair
For a light red shade:
¾ oz. Red Fashion Color
¾oz. Lady Clairol
3 oz. Clairoxide or Pure White Creme Developer For a deep red color:
¾ oz. Red Fashion Color
¾oz. Clairoxide or Pure White Creme Developer
Virgin Hair.
- Pre-bleach the hair using Neutral Clairolite or Lady Clairol Whipped Creme Hair Lightener. When the hair is lightened sufficiently, shampoo, rinse and towel dry.
- Apply color mixture to ¾of the strand, omitting the ends.
- Start taking strand tests for color after 5 minutes of development.
Red Fashion Colors On Natural Hair For A Retouch

1. Section hair into four equal parts.
2. Apply with brush or applicator to roots only. Allow to develop. Comb through ¾ of shaft. Work balance through ends like a soap cap.
3. Test to see if color is even throughout. Then rinse and shampoo.
4. Work balance of mixture through the ends as soon as color hat.begun to develop.
5. Test again for color.
6. Rinse and shampoo when color is even from scalp to ends.
Retouch.
- Pre-bleach new growth only. Shampoo, rinse and towel dry.
- Apply color mixture to roots and allow to develop until the test strand shows enough color at the roots.
- Blend by combing through ¾ of the shaft.
- Work the balance through the ends like a soap cap.
- Test for color.
- Rinse and shampoo when color is even throughout.
As A Red Silver Toner On Highly Bleached Hair
For a light delicate tone:
¾ oz. Red Fashion Color
¾ oz. Lady Clairol
3 oz. Clairoxide or Pure White Creme Developer
Virgin Hair.
- Pre-bleach the hair as you would for Silver or Ash Blonding (See Chapter 9). Hair must be lightened to the Gold or Yellow stage. Use Lady Clairol and when necessary, Lady Clairol when Lightening Booster. Shampoo, rinse, and towel-dry.
- Part the hair in four equal sections.
- Apply the mixture to the back portion first. Start 1 inch from the roots and apply down to the ends of the hair shaft. Be sure that the ends are thoroughly saturated with the mixture.
- Return to the root area immediately and apply the mixture ½ inch further up the shaft. Do not go all the way to the scalp. Keep ½ inch away.
- Allow the tint to develop for a few minutes. Keep testing until the ends begin to hold color.
- Apply to root area when the color on the ends seems to be deep enough. However, if test strand shows shaft is throwing off color, in order to avoid having the roots redder or deeper than the ends, dilute the balance of the mixture to be applied to the roots with an equal amount of Clairoxide or Pure White Creme Developer.
- Pour enough of the mixture through the entire head to blend color. Comb through hair until color is even from the scalp to the ends,
- Test frequently. The longer the Red color develops, the deeper the final color will be.
- Add an equal amount of Clairol Shampoo for Bleached and Toned Hair to whatever amount remains in the applicator when the hair has reached the shade you desire. Work gently into a soap cap. (If no tint remains, apply just enough shampoo directly to the hair to make a soap cap.)
- Rinse thoroughly and give a light shampoo.
Red Fashion Colors As A Toner On Highly Bleached Hair

1. Apply to back portion of head first, starting 1 inch away from roots, and apply down to ends of hair shaft.
2. Apply ½ inch further up the hair shaft. Be sure to keep ½ inch away from scalp during this application.
3. Dilute remaining tint with equal amount of Clairoxide or Pure White Creme Developer and work through entire head. Comb and blend until even. Then give soap cap and final rinse.
Retouch
- Pre-bleach the hair on the new growth only.
- Apply the color mixture in exactly the same manner as for virgin hair.
If your customer wishes to change from a blonde to a redhead, the formula to use is:
¾ oz. Red Fashion Color
¾ oz. Clairoxide or Pure White Creme Developer
After pre-bleaching the new growth, apply as you would a Red Silver Toner.
On the next application you can avoid pre-bleaching by using the regular formula:
¾ oz. Red Fashion Color
¾ oz. Lady Clairol
3 oz. Clairoxide or Pure White Creme Developer
Use this formula on all future applications.
Patch And Preliminary Strand TestsIt is important to remember that a preliminary patch test must be given before the application of Red Fashion Color.
A preliminary strand test is also important to determine the proper color and the length of time necessary to leave the Red Fashion Color on the hair. Mix ½teaspoon Red Color, ½teaspoon Lady Clairol and 2 teaspoons Clairoxide or Pure White Creme Developer. Apply this to a small strand of hair. If breakage or discoloration results, reconditioning before coloring will be necessary.
Do's And Dont's For Red Fashion ColorsDo's
- Always keep partly used bottles tightly closed.
- Be sure tint and peroxide are at room temperature when used.
- For best results, use fresh Clairoxide or Pure White Creme Developer. Both are superior, stabilized 20-volume hydrogen peroxide.
- Be sure to use a good bland shampoo that does not strip color from the hair. Clairol Shampoo for Bleached and Toned Hair is ideal for this purpose.
- Don't use metallic mixing dish. Use plastic or glass mixing bowl or plastic applicator.
- Don't keep any mixture after Lady Clairol or developer has been added.
- Don't use Salon Formula Red Fashion Color as an eyelash or eyebrow dye.
- Don't use if there are any openings or abrasions on scalp.
